Former Cincinnati Steam pitcher Danny Rosenbaum has been selected by the Colorado Rockies in the Rule 5 Draft held at the MLB Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee. Rosenbaum, who pitched for the Steam in the summer of 2007, was previously in the Washington Nationals organization.

The Loveland High School graduate, who pitched collegiately at both Indiana University and Xavier, was rated as the Nationals’ #13 minor league prospect. In 2012, Rosenbaum finished his second full season with the Double-A Harrisburg Senators in the Eastern League with an 8-10 record and a 3.94 ERA in 26 starts. He led the Senators in strikeouts (99) and innings pitched (155.1).

Rosenbaum, who was promoted to the Triple-A roster during the off-season, but was not on the Nationals 40-man roster. Not being on the 40-man roster plus being under contract for four seasons (when originally being singed after at age 19 or older) made him Rule 5 eligible.

According to MLB rules; “A team that selects a player in the Rule 5 Draft pays $50,000 to the team from which he was selected. The receiving team must then keep the player on the Major League 25-man roster for the entirety of the next season, and the selected player must remain active (not on the disabled list) for a minimum of 90 days. If the player does not remain on the Major League roster, he is offered back to the team from which he was selected for $25,000. If his original team declines, the receiving team may waive the player. Once a player is selected, he is automatically assigned to his new organization’s 40-man roster.”

The left handed Rosenbaum should compete in spring training for a spot in the Rockies opening day starting rotation. His stiffest competion should come from Jeff Francis, who is sloted as the number-one starter, Drew Pomeranz, Jhoulys Chacin, Christian Freidrich Juan Nicasio.

CINCINNATI, OHIO – Three Steam alumni, Josh Harrison (Pittsburgh Pirates), Nathan Jones (Chicago White Sox) and Adam Eaton (Arizona Diamondbacks), are currently playing in Major League Baseball. Here is a recap of the former Steam players that played in the big leagues during the 2012 season.

Josh Harrison – (2006) – Pittsburgh Pirates

.233/.279/.345, 58-for-249, 9 2B, 5 3B, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 7 SB

Harrison was a member of the Opening Day roster and spent his first full season in the big leagues with the Pirates in 2012 after spending half of the 2011 year with Pittsburgh. The former University of Cincinnati and Princeton High School standout was used in a utility role as an extra infielder and backup outfielder… Saw time at third base, shortstop, center field and right field during his 104 games played… Led the team with 29 pinch hit appearances… Delivered a walk off single in the 12th inning vs. Houston Astros on May 13… Hit first home run of the season on May 16 against Washington Nationals LHP Gio Gonzalez… Had a career high 10-game hitting streak from May 13-25… Broke up a Justin Verlander no-hitter on May 18 vs. the Tigers at Comerica Park with a one-out ninth inning single… Went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases against the Minnesota Twins on June 19… Hit a home run in front of friends and family at Great American Ball Park on August 4th against the Reds… Tied a career-high with four hits and scored two runs against the Houston Astros on September 23.

Nathan Jones – (2006) – Chicago White Sox

8-0, 2.39 ERA, 65 APP, 71.2 IP, 67 H, 32 BB, 65 SO

The Butler, Kentucky native made the White Sox opening day roster and spent the entire season in the majors working exclusively out the bullpen… Struck out Josh Hamilton in his major league debut against the Rangers on April 8… Recorded his first major league victory on May 5 against the Detroit Tigers with one shutout inning in relief… Recorded a career-high four strikeouts against Kansas City Royals on May 12… Went 3-0 in the months of May and August… Pitched a career-high 2 and 2/3 innings and earned the victory, giving up just one hit while striking out two batters, on September 17 against Detroit Tigers… In 32 appearances after the all-star break he went 5-0 with a 1.64 ERA.

Adam Eaton – (2008) – Arizona Diamondbacks

.259/.382/.412, 22-for-85, 3 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 19 R, 2 SB

After earning the PCL Most Valuable Player award, the former Miami University standout was rewarded with a September call-up to the Diamondbacks… Played in 22 games before his season was cut short on September 29 when he was hit by a pitch and suffered a broken hand against the Chicago Cubs… Went 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored in his major league debut against the San Francisco Giants on September 4… Made and immediate impact going 10-for-25 (.400) in his first five games in the major leagues… Hit his two home runs in back-to-back games, September 20 against San Diego (Brad Brach) and September 21 versus Colorado (Josh Outman)… Going into the off season was one of just five outfielders on the Diamondbacks 40-man roster and has an excellent chance to make the opening day roster for the 2013 season.

Conley, who played collegiately at Xavier, made 32 relief appearances for the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League and recorded a 5-0 record with a 1.61 ERA. Conley received national attention while playing for Jacksonville when he picked off Cincinnati Reds farmhand Billy Hamilton.

Adam Eaton (2008) – Arizona Diamondback (Triple-A Pacific Coast League)

.375/.355/.377, 198-for-528, 47 2B, 5 3B, 7 HR, 48 RBI, 130 R, 44 SB

Eaton, the #6 rated prospect in the Diamondbacks organization, became the third former Steam player to make it to the big leagues when he was called up in September when the rosters were expanded. The 2012 PCL Player of the Year led off the Triple-A all-star game with a single and came around to score the first run of the game. After helping lead Mobile to the 2011 Southern League Championship, Eaton started the 2012 season by playing the first 11 games of the year in Double-A before being promoted to the Triple-A Reno Aces. The Miami University product made his major league debut on September 4th after hitting .381 for Reno.

In the spring, the West Chester native was 6-6 with a 3.75 ERA in 17 appearances (nine starts) with 37 strikeouts in 60 innings of work. Leesman pitched a career high 8-plus innings in the 8-1 victory, scattering six hits, giving up just one earned run, one walk, while striking out six batters.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – Perfect Game USA, one of the largest amateur baseball scouting services in the country, has released its Top 30 Prospects from the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League and the Cincinnati Steam were represented by five players from the 2012 roster.

Jake Madsen (Ohio University/Moeller), a left-handed hitting first baseman was ranked the number-six top prospect. Madsen lead the team and was second in the league with a .396 batting average. Madsen, who was a mid-season all-star selection and post season all-league performer, was near the top of all the Steam offensive categories with three home runs, 21 RBIs, 42 hits and seven doubles. He was one of the top clutch hitters on the team, leading the Steam in batting average with runners on base (.419), runners in scoring position (.520) and runners in scoring position with two outs (.556). One of his many highlights of the season was a ninth inning grand slam home run at Hamilton on July 21 in an 8-7 come-from-behind victory against the Joes.

Justin Glass (University of Cincinnati) joined the team two weeks into the season after a brief stint in the Cape Cod League was rated as the eighth highest prospect. Glass made an immediate impact with a walk-off base hit to win his first game with the Steam, a 12-inning 1-0 win at home against the Xenia Scouts. His .364 batting average is second highest on the team and sixth in the league. Glass tied for the team lead in home runs (4) and second on the Steam with 22 RBIs and was an All-GLSCL post-season selection.

Kyle Hart (Indiana/Sycamore) earned the number nine spot of the Perfect Game Top 30 list. Hart, a left-handed starting pitcher, made six starts and tallied a 3-1 record with a 3.78 ERA. In 33 and 1/3 innings of work, Hart led the Steam with 36 strikeouts while giving up just 10 walks. Hart made his seventh start of the season in the post season in the first game of the GLSCL semi-final series against the Southern Ohio Copperheads. In that game, Hart received a no-decision after six innings of work and gave up just one earned run, striking out four batters, walking one and scattering six hits.

Brian Korte (Indiana/Elder), one of just three starting pitchers to be named to the post season All-GLSCL first-team, ranked number 21 on the Top 30 list. Korte was second among the league qualifiers in the GLSCL with a 2.12 ERA. In six starts, Korte registered a 2-0 record while working a team high 34 innings, striking out 26 batters and only giving up 12 walks and eight earned runs. In his most recent outing, Korte earned the win on July 27 against Hamilton, going six innings and only giving up one unearned run and striking out five batters. During the season, opposing hitters hit just .233 against him.

Matt Williams (Cincinnati/CHCA) was named as an honorable mention selection as he just missed the Top 30 list. Williams was the first Steam player to ever hit for the cycle, doing so in his first four at bats on July 20 against the Xenia Scouts. Williams, who was a mid-season all-star, led the Steam offense in virtually every category. He is the team’s third leading hitter with a .326 batting average and was tied with Glass for the team high in home runs with four. Williams was tops in RBIs (26), hits (44), at-bats (135), triples (2) and stolen bases (14). A shortstop by trade, Williams earned post season honors as a utility player thanks to his ability to split time between the infield and playing centerfield.

Stark County outfielder Max Murphy (Bradley University) who won the GLSCL Player of the Year award was named the number-one prospect in the GLSCL Top 30 list. Murphy was tied for the league lead in home runs (9), was second in RBIs (34) and fifth in batting average (.369).

The Steam finished the 2012 regular season with a 24-15 record and was the regular season champions after winning a three-way tie breaker with the Lima Locos and the Licking County Settlers. The Steam advanced to the GLSCL championship series before losing the series 2-0 to the Settlers for the league championship.
